19 Sep 07Wildlife Haven Celebrated At Hatch Pond
Borough of Poole is highlighting some of the rare and special creatures living at Hatch Pond Nature Reserve with a newly installed interpretation board.
The Nature Reserve is situated within Poole's urban area, between some of Poole's largest industrial and housing estates and in close proximity to a major dual carriageway, making the rich array and diversity of wildlife on the site truly unique.
The interpretation board has been funded by Borough of Poole's Leisure Services and was created by local artist Maria Burns, with the assistance of Leisure Services Ranger, Terry Elborn.

The aim of the board is to raise awareness amongst local residents about the amazing wildlife that can be enjoyed right on their doorstep.
As well as familiar wildlife, unusual species are also highlighted on the board. These include the Great Crested Grebe
, which is a speciality of Hatch Pond as this species would not usually live in an urban setting, and the Bittern
, which is a threatened species in Britain and a very scarce winter visitor in Dorset. Hatch Pond is one of the easiest places in the county to see this species.

Nick Woods, Ranger Team Leader for Leisure Services, said: "The southern shore along Hatch Pond is easily accessible, making this an ideal site for everyone to experience the unique wildlife this site has to offer."
Cllr Peter Adams, Portfolio Holder for Leisure Services, said: "Hatch Pond is an unique wildlife haven which should be celebrated. The interpretation board is the perfect way to show off this beautiful area and the tremendous work that the Rangers do to keep it so special."
Hatch Pond Local Nature Reserve is in Canford Heath West and can be accessed from Hatch Pond Road or Stinsford Road.
