POOLE SCHOOLS - BEST GCSE RESULTS EVER

Schools in Poole achieved their best ever results at GCSE in 2000. The Government has just published national results for all education authorities and Poole had the sixth highest results out of 121 authorities.

Sixty per cent of pupils in Poole achieved 5 higher grade GCSE's, compared with the national average of forty-nine per cent. Further, results across all the Poole schools show that since 1997, there has been a nine per cent improvement, compared with four per cent nationally. This improvement rate is particularly impressive as it shows the year on year rise in results that all schools have achieved.

Cllr Annette Brooke, the Council's Learning Spokesperson for the Executive, said: "I am delighted that since gaining unitary status, the schools in Poole have continued to produce such excellent results. To be the sixth highest achieving authority is very pleasing and due largely to the sheer hard work of teachers and support staff in schools."

She continued: "It is a particularly impressive achievement as schools in Poole receive the seventh lowest funding in the country. We have worked hard to get the best possible deal for the schools from Government but it is very unfair that authorities are not treated equally. However, our GCSE results demonstrate the very good value for money achieved by the schools."

Jeff Hart, Head of School Advice and Support, added: "All the secondary schools in Poole have put in place strategies to enable the pupils to achieve their best. The remarkable results at GCSE this year reflect the success of these strategies. We are about to embark on new initiatives for 11 to 14 year olds which will build on the excellent results this year."
