Pool closed at Lodge Hill

Borough of Poole Environmental Health Officers have confirmed that cryptosporidium has been found in samples of water taken from Lodge Hill swimming pool.   The Council closed the pool on Monday 5 December as a precautionary measure following advice from Dorset's Health Protection Unit and Environmental Health Officers after two cases of the stomach bug Cryptosporidium were reported.  Three young people have now been confirmed as having the illness.

Officers from Leisure Services are arranging for work to be carried out over the next few weeks, which will involve a thorough cleansing procedure of the pool and checks on machinery, it is not expected that the pool will be drained.  Further details will be available once the pool has been fully inspected and it will remain shut until it is confirmed the work has been successful.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "We hope to have the pool treated and back to its usual high standards as quickly as possible but we need to ensure that it is safe for people to use before it is re-opened."

Sue Bennett, from Dorset Health Protection Unit, said: "Cryptosporidium is a relatively common illness often associated with water.  Although unpleasant, it is rarely serious, with the main symptoms being diarrhoea, stomach cramps and bloating.  It usually takes between seven and 10 days for symptoms to develop.

"Should anyone be worried that they or a member of their family are suffering from these symptoms, they should see their GP as soon as possible.  They should also ensure high standards of personal hygiene at all times at all times as the infection can spread from person to person."
