Libraries Visit Poole Hospital

Poole's Culture and Community Service has helped children from a local middle school to perform their versions of a classic story for young patients at Poole Hospital.

Pupils from Baden Powell and St Peter's CE VC Middle School performed their own version of "Little Red Riding Hood", the classic fairy tale by the Brothers' Grimm, to children in the school room of Poole Hospital's link will open in new window Children's Ward.

Staff from the Children's Library Service worked with Year 4 pupils to write and produce their own adaptations of the story for the hospital visit.

Literary Officer Laura Sneddon, of Borough of Poole's Culture and Community Service, said: "The visit was very well received by all the children and there was a lot of laughter and fun, which was great to see. All the children were really responsive, and the pupils presenting got a real sense of achievement from the positive responses."

Penny Jarvis, Associate Director of Operations, Women and Children's Care, Poole Hospital NHS Trust, said: "The children on the wards really enjoyed the storytelling morning. A great deal of thought and work had gone in to producing the book and to dedicate it to the Children's Unit is a lovely thought. The children particularly liked the fact that the pupils had made costumes to bring the story to life."

Laura and fellow Literacy Officer Angela Tigwell each spent a day at Baden Powell and St Peter's CE VC Middle School talking to pupils about the history of the tale, looking at how it has changed over the years, and developing their writing and book illustration skills.

Laura Sneddon added: "The pupils were given a basic outline of the story and were asked to elaborate it using descriptive writing. They used computers to type up their part of the story and illustrate their writing. This project has benefited the 150 pupils who took part, teaching them practical skills such as writing and storytelling, as well as encouraging them to develop partnership work."

As well as the hospital visit, some pupils had a chance to share their stories with younger children from three local first schools, including Courthill First School, Heatherlands First School and Lilliput CE VC First School.

Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Portfolio Holder for Community Support, said: "This project has been an excellent way of engaging young people to communicate with others, and emphasise the importance of  working together. The Council encourage projects such as this, which benefit a wide range of children and encourages communication and literacy skills."

The pupils' books are on display at the Civic Centre from Monday 4 December to 18 December 2006.
