At the Education Committee on 26 January 1999, members will be asked to approve a total of £630,000 to continue the Borough of Poole's commitment to improving the quality of School buildings and developing their use in the wider community. The funding requests are:
· £300,000 extension for Ad Astra school to reduce class sizes to 30
· £260,000 extension for St Edward's school to secure another 100 pupil places
· £45,000 for the completion of refurbishment at Old Town First School
· £25,000 for additional improvements to the playing field at Oakdale South Road school for community use
Vic Sandel, Head of Education Policy and Planning said: "The allocation of funds will enable Poole to improve existing school facilities and ensure there are sufficient pupil places available to meet future demands in the Borough. This will help us comply with Government requirements for class sizes of 30 and provide good quality education in our schools".
Cllr Annette Brooke, Chairman of the Education Committee said: "The recent Community Learning and Development Initiative at Oakdale highlighted the way the needs of the school and residents could be met by improving facilities at the playing field at Oakdale South Road Middle school. We will be looking across the borough for other ways to use local facilities to the benefit of both schools and the community".
