New Mental Health Services for Poole

A new service for people with a mental illness who live in the community has been developed in Poole . The service which aims to provide practical support, is jointly funded by the Borough of Poole and Department of Health through the Government's Mental Illness Specific Grant Partnership Fund.

Services will be provided by a full time worker from the National Schizophrenia Society and a part time worker from Stonham Housing Association who specialises in working with women with mental health problems. Support includes guidance and advice on problems which occur in day to day life to help people develop their independence.

The initial focus of the project will concentrate on Housing Association properties which support people living in the community with mental illness. This will include Stonham Housing Association's new accommodation in Poole, and Millennium House, run by Bournemouth Churches Housing Association which offers supported housing for up to 9 residents.

Allan Brown, Principal Officer for Mental Health from Poole Social Services said "Practical support is often crucial to the success of people with a mental illness living on their own in the community. This project will mean that there will be a significant increase in the amount of support available, particularly when people return home after being in hospital."
