18 Jun 04Plans for the Trinidad First School Site Approved
Members of the Borough of Poole's Planning Committee have agreed plans for much needed, additional affordable housing on the former Trinidad First School site.
Councillors voted seven to four in favour of the plans which will see the creation of 44 new affordable homes in the town for people currently waiting on the council's housing list.
The scheme is made up of a mix of contemporary semi-detached and terraced housing together with 15 flats. These will be managed by the Knightstone Housing Association and offered to residents either for rent or as low cost home ownership schemes including shared ownership which means residents own a percentage of the property and pay rent on the rest.
In addition access to the site has been improved and money from planning obligations has been used to upgrade the adjacent open space including cycle ways, footpaths and lighting.
Council leader Brian Leverett said: "I welcome the decision that has been made by the Planning Committee. The Borough of Poole has a clearly stated commitment to address the urgent need for affordable housing and this is totally in keeping with the council's aims.
"The scheme is for a mix of high quality homes with plenty of open space - none has been lost as a result of this scheme - together with a play area for the under fives. In addition we are reducing the number of access points on to Herbert Avenue."
Planning is only the first stage before the land which is owned by the Borough of Poole can be sold. Any decision to sell the land would have to be agreed by the Cabinet.
