5 Mar 99Poole To Be Showcased In Westminster
The Pride of Poole's industry is to be showcased in a special exhibition at the House of Commons next week.An exhibition has been especially designed which profiles Poole's industry at its best, and will be on display in the Upper Waiting Hall from 8-12 March 1999.
This opportunity came about when Poole's MP, Robert Syms was successfully drawn out of the ballot for display space in the Upper Waiting Hall.
The display will include two main themes; Poole Britannia - featuring dynamic and innovative Poole businesses and Modernising Local Government - highlighting ways in which the Borough of Poole is modernising.
The exhibition will be launched on Monday 8 March 1999. The guest of honour will be Canadian High Commissioner, the Honourable Roy MacLaren PC and the exhibition will be officially opened by Hilary Armstrong MP, Minister for Local Government and Housing.
Robert Syms, MP for Poole said; "It took over 12 months to secure this exhibition space and I'm very pleased and proud that we have this superb opportunity to promote Poole and its industries. Unfortunately the Prime Minister, Tony Blair and the Leader of the opposition, William Hague MP are unable to attend, but both of them have wished us well with what will be an exciting exhibition".
Leader of the Council, Brian Clements said: "We certainly have good reason to be proud of our town. Not only is it an area of outstanding natural beauty, but we have ground breaking businesses which ensure Poole is on the map as a vibrant and successful town of which local people are justifiably proud".
Cllr Ann Stribley, Leader of the Conservative Group said: "This is a rare opportunity to meet with key representatives from the Houses of Parliament and we are looking forward to giving Poole the national profile it deserves".
Cllr Brian Ellis, Leader of the Labour Group said: "Business people and Councillors from Poole will be joining Ministers in a celebration of the town. MP's often have the chance to promote Britain abroad. We want to be sure that they know just what Poole has to offer."
A highlight of the official opening will be the launch of a brand new feature of the Council's website, the "Open Zone " which allows people to register their email addresses and select areas that are of particular interest to them so they can be kept up to date on developments in those areas. At the launch, Ms Armstrong will be invited to become the first person to register on the site as it goes live on www.poole.uk.uk.
Information on ways in which the Borough of Poole has involved the community in issues of local and national importance and particular activities undertaken by the Council are also featured in the display.
