7 Apr 99REDUCE GREEN WASTE IN YOUR WHEELIE BIN BY COMPOSTING
A survey conducted by Borough of Poole Consumer Protection employees on the contents of wheelie bins has revealed that more than 30% of Poole's domestic waste is green waste.Last year, green waste cost the Borough £425,233 to collect and dispose of and the majority went to landfill. On the 1st April 1999, Central Government, as part of it's strategy to encourage home composting and alternative ways of dealing with waste, increased landfill tax from £7 per tonne to £10 - a rise of 43%.
Peter Pawlowski, Borough of Poole Head of Consumer Protection said: "Landfill tax will progressively increase in the coming years and we will have no control on these rises. Inevitably, this means that we will face increasing costs in the disposal of waste which will impact on every household in Poole."
He added: "Composting is a marvellous opportunity for all residents to help reduce the amount of green waste that is collected and sent to landfill. Home composting will benefit the environment as well as resulting in significant savings. In fact it has been estimated that across the conurbation (Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch), over £1 million could be saved if all green waste was removed from wheelie bins and composted."
To help encourage local residents to compost, the local authorities of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch are holding a composter sale for one day only on Sunday 11th April 1999.
