NEW COCKLE TRAIL GUIDE

A brand new Trail Guide featuring the pride of Poole's history is launched this weekend to accompany Poole's Cockle Trail. Residents and visitors alike will be encouraged to get the most from the Trail as the new leaflet guides them around Poole Quay and the Old Town highlighting aspects of Poole's rich history. The launch of the Guide coincides with Poole Cockle Festival taking place around Poole Quay and the Old Town from 1-3 May 1999.

Poole's Cockle Trail, launched last year, is a permanent commemoration of the 750th anniversary of the Longspee Charter which granted the town its freedom in 1248.

The trail features 78 numbered brass plaques set in the pavement which guide visitors around Poole Quay and the Old Town. Starting at the Fish Shambles on Poole Quay, adjacent to Poole Pottery, visitors follow a route which incorporates the Quay, Thames Street and Market Street conservation area and the lower High Street. The walk finishes outside the Waterfront Museum where visitors can find more about Poole's rich history.

The pocket size guide includes a map of the route, illustrations and full details of Poole's historic past. Special activity sessions also encourage children and adults to take an interest in finding answers to a variety of questions whilst on the walk.

Celia Woods of Cranberries in Sarum Street, said ''I think this a great idea. At last people are being encouraged to explore Poole beyond the Quay. There are so many interesting facts to learn about Poole's past, and this leaflet will appeal to young and old alike'.

Cockle Trail Guides are on sale for 20p from the Tourist Information Centre on Poole Quay and from various advertisers featured in the guide.
