HALF PRICE BUS FARES ON CAR FREE DAY

On Tuesday 8 June, people across Dorset travelling off peak on any bus will be able to travel for half the usual fare to celebrate National Car Free Day.

This unique offer is part of the Borough of Poole, Bournemouth Borough Council and Dorset County Council TravelWise campaign and was developed in partnership with Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, Yellow Buses, Wilts & Dorset and Southern National (including Dorset Transit).

With only one in 20 journeys under 5 miles made by bus and the majority of short journeys still made by car, schemes such as TravelWise aim to encourage sensible car use by promoting alternative transport such as walking, cycling and public transport.

Mayor Cllr Bill Wretham backed the campaign 100%: "The number of cars on our roads is increasing every year which will mean that traffic problems across Dorset will get worse unless we all examine how we use our cars".

Councillor Bob Williams, Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee added; "By giving everyone the opportunity to travel on buses at a reduced rate, we hope they will see that buses do provide a real alternative to using cars. The new low floor buses are particularly important as they provide more room for wheelchairs and pushchairs, making them easier for everyone to use".
