Around one in four 16 - 24 year olds are hazardous drinkers and experience problems as a result of a night's drinking. That is one of the messages being publicised as part of a campaign in Poole to increase parents' awareness of the dangers of underage drinking.

The campaign, which launches on Monday 2 October, is being led by the Alcohol Related Anti-Social Behaviour Task Group, part of the Poole Safe Together Partnership. Members include the Council's Environmental & Consumer Protection Services (E&CPS) and Transportation Services, Dorset Police link will open in new window, the Youth Offending Team, the Drug and Alcohol Action Team link will open in new windowand Poole Hospital link will open in new window.

Posters and postcards with educational messages about the law and the consequences of underage drinking will be available throughout Poole, on buses and in doctors, dentists, cinema, pharmacies, hospitals and more.

The campaign comes ahead of the launch of Poole's first Alcohol Strategy which is currently being formulated by a number of agencies across Poole to address all of the alcohol related issues faced by the town.

Ann Maguire, Drug Action Team link will open in new window (DAT) Coordinator and Chair of the Task Group said: "Problems related to underage drinking have increased over recent years and the Drug Action Team is concerned about the effect on young people's health and the possible consequences of risk taking while under the influence of alcohol. The campaign aims to increase knowledge and understanding about the harm that alcohol consumption can cause to young people and the laws that govern alcohol sales.. It is aimed directly at parents and offers the information and support they need to help them have a positive influence on the choices young people make."
