NEW POOLE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS FORUM

Headteachers, Governors and parents are working with the Borough of Poole to look at how pupils are admitted to schools.

A new School Admissions Forum has been set up to examine all aspects of admissions policies throughout Poole and aims to simplify processes for parents.

Currently Local Education Authority (LEA) Schools have a common policy, with Grant Maintained and Voluntary (Aided) Schools as Admission Authorities in their own right, holding separate policies. Because of this policies can vary, with different closing dates and entry forms for entry to schools which can be confusing for parents.

Cllr Mrs Annette Brooke, Chairman of the Education Committee said: "At the moment parents can be faced with a variety of admissions arrangements depending on which school they prefer their children attend. The forum will be working together to make admissions to school much easier and clearer. One of it's first aims is to provide an admissions booklet for 2000-2001 pupil intake which includes information for all the Schools in Poole."

In addition to Admissions Authorities across the Borough, the Forum includes representatives from, Poole's Parents' Forum and the Early Years Development and Childcare Forum, to ensure the views of parents are heard.

John Short, Headmaster, Poole High School said: "The Admissions Forum's first meeting gave everyone involved the chance to meet to discuss all aspects of school admissions. By working in partnership we can begin the process of co-ordinating admission arrangements as far as possible for the benefit of all."
