BRAND NEW SPORTS AND COUNTRY PARK FOR POOLE

WORK has started on a new million pound Sports and Country Park on the site of Moortown Aerodrome, Magna Road.

The Canford Park Sports and Country Park will be a brand new facility in Poole and will include landscaped walks, trim trails, an events arena, 6 football pitches and cricket squares. The site will cost in the region of £1million to develop and phase one, the sports pitches are due to open in Autumn 2000. Phase 2, the country park, will be complete by 2003.

The Moortown aerodrome site consists of 120 acres of land which is jointly owned by Borough of Poole and Bournemouth Borough Council. The land was bought in the 1936 as a potential aerodrome site but was never developed.

In 1994 Poole and Bournemouth Councils issued a brief for the site for a leisure development that would be compatible with the site's green belt status. Negotiations with Woodlands Manor Estates began in 1997.

Cllr Andrew Muspratt, Chairman of Culture & Leisure Committee, Borough of Poole said; 'This is going to be a superb new facility that everyone can enjoy. It's a good example of what can be achieved by both Councils working together. I'm looking forward to seeing the site take shape over the next year.'
