New initiatives to help people across the community take part in Adult Education will be presented to the Borough of Poole's Education Committee today. The initiatives aim to reach people who may face barriers taking part in education and encourage new ways of learning which build confidence and self-esteem.
Initiatives to promote wider participation across Poole include:
· Inter-generational learning - offering IT courses for parents, grandparents, carers and children during school holidays
· Improving access and facilities at Poole's Adult Education Centre, Oakdale including a new Video link with Bournemouth and Poole College and local schools
· New Individual Learning Accounts in partnership with Dorset TEC - helping people back into learning by part funding payment for courses
· Family Literacy Projects working with schools, parents and children to improve learning and Literacy in Turlin Moor, Hillbourne, Canford Heath and Alderney
· Poole and Bournemouth Return to Learn/Work project working with people who are homeless
Councillor Mrs Annette Brooke, Chairman of the Education Committee, said: "We are working to widen participation in Adult Education to all members of the community. To help people into courses, we will have to consider how course fees can be kept as low as possible. New shorter courses have also been made available for anyone not wishing to take part in courses during winter months. Courses take place at a wide number of venues within the Borough, so that people do not have to travel too far and we are increasing the range and number of local venues so people will find it much easier to take part".
