POOLE PARTNERSHIP ART WORKSHOP PROJECT

Talented students from schools across Poole are taking part in a series of intensive art "master classes".

The three day session, hosted by the Arts Institute at Bournemouth, is part of an innovative project for talented Year 9 students from independent and state schools to work with professional artists.

Funded by the Government, the project aims to build links with schools across the Borough by providing opportunities for students to work together.

Bridget Baines, Assessment Advisor, Borough of Poole, said: "This is an exciting project which gives pupils from Poole's schools a chance to meet with working artists and put their talents to the test. Students will learn from each other as well as the artists. I'm sure everyone will enjoy getting to know people with similar interests and we are looking forward to seeing the results".

Six students have been nominated by each school to work on a large scale still life with three professional, working artists who teach part time at the Arts Institute.

Kate Buxton, one of the artists involved in the project, said: "During an intensive three day workshop, students will develop their awareness of texture, composition and colour through exploring materials and techniques including drawing, painting and collage. The shared experience of the creative process helps to stimulate the individual imagination in a challenging and exciting way".

The art master class is the first to be introduced in three subject areas with classes for mathematics and writing scheduled for next year. Contributions from each of the master class subjects will form part of a presentation on the project at Poole Arts Centre in June 2000.
