The announcement by the Learning and Technology Minister, Michael Wills, on subsidised computers for teachers has been warmly welcomed by the Borough of Poole.Karen Davies, Senior Adviser in the Borough with responsibility for the training programme for teachers' Information Technology skills, said: "This offer will be a real boost to those teachers who are embarking on the programme which is being funded by the New Opportunities Fund. Eleven of our forty-two schools are already taking part - a very high proportion compared with other similar authorities. Anything which encourages the wider use of new technology amongst the teaching profession should lead to better opportunities for pupils in the future".
Di Mitchell, Senior Adviser for Information Communication Technology, added: "The Borough has made major advances in the development of information technology in its schools since becoming a Unitary Authority in 1997. Our schools have a very high ratio of computers to pupils. By the end of the next financial year every school will have benefited from the National Grid for Learning funding which has done so much to improve computer facilities and access to the Internet.
Teachers taking advantage of this scheme will be able to enhance both their confidence and expertise in the new technology and will therefore be better able to support the learning of their pupils."
