New Disability Action Group for Poole

A new Action Group for the disabled was launched on Monday 3 December at the Waterfront Museum as part of International Day for Disabled People.

Poole Action for Access has been developed from Borough of Poole's Joint Disability Awareness Working Party and aim to promote accessibility for disabled people by campaigning, educating and supporting any access issue within the Borough. The Disability Awareness Working Party have worked hard to ensure the improvement of access at Poole High Street Level Crossing, Poole Central Library and the Local Studies Centre at the Waterfront Museum.

Cllr Jane James, Executive Spokesperson for Care said: 'We welcome the formation of this new group particularly as it is free standing, not limited like Council groups. There are many access issues which still need to be tackled and I am delighted that Poole Action for Access will be campaigning for them.'

Belinda Thompson, Independent Living Co-ordinator said: 'The Borough has been positively encouraging disabled people to become a driving force for creating a more inclusive community. I hope that Poole Action for Access will be one of many examples of what can be achieved by organisations of disabled people to bring about change.'

Poole Action for Access would like to be informed of any public place which disabled people find difficult to access. They also hope to make annual awards for good practice in access and would be interested in hearing from people with possible nominations.
