Borough of Poole Consumer Protection Officers are urging new parents to plan for their child's safety before an accident occurs.
Parents of children aged between 0 and 4 years may not be aware that this age group suffer 61% of all childhood accidents.
Consumer Protection Services have provided copies of the 'Buy Wise Be Safe' video and training package to all of Poole Primary Care Trust's Health Visitor Teams and to Nursery Nurses. The video, supported by a teaching pack, provides advice on what safety equipment to buy and where to buy it in an easy to understand and entertaining way.
Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "Having your first child is challenging for most parents but it is important to find time to plan for your child's safety. The Buy Wise Be Safe video package provides excellent advice on buying the correct equipment such as car seats, cots, high chairs, pushchairs and safety gates as well as tips on making your home safer."
Should new parents in Poole wish to see the Buy Wise Be Safe training package they should ask their health visitor.
Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: "It is extremely important to think about your child's safety before they are born to avoid a distressing accident at your home, in your car or out and about. Careful planning ahead and wise purchasing should ensure your child's chances of having a preventable accident are much reduced."
Copies of the training packs are also available to other health professionals or parents groups in Poole and can be obtained from Consumer Protection Services. Tel 01202 261700.
