Fit For Caring In Poole

Carers who usually spend their days looking after a relative or friend with a long term illness, disability or frailty through old age, have been given a break and a chance to improve their health thanks to local businesses Esporta Health & Racquets Club and Fitness First.

15 local carers enjoyed a day of pampering at Esporta club in Poole. The day included the opportunity to learn about general fitness, Indian head massage and have a go at the many activities on offer at the club. A complimentary lunch allowed carers to meet each other and share experiences. Fitness First donated vouchers offering carers an opportunity to try out their facilities in Poole.

Val Mitchell, Carers Development Officer, Borough of Poole, said: "Life can be very physically demanding for carers. Maintaining good health and reducing stress levels is very important. Those who look after relatives can really benefit from the type of opportunities provided, we are very grateful to Esporta and Fitness First for their support."

One in eight people look after relatives or friends who are ill, frail or have a disability. Many do not access the support that is available. Eight events, co-ordinated by the Borough of Poole, were held during Carers Week to help those who are caring learn more about it and the help that is on offer.

Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Portfolio Holder for Community Support including Social Services, said: "Caring can be tiring and isolating and affects many people. It is important that carers have a chance to relax and take a break, Carers Week is a good way of highlighting their needs. I'm glad that Poole support the week in this way and that some carers were able to enjoy the donations on offer. I am encouraged that local businesses see a part for themselves in supporting the community and hope more will follow."

The fitness activities were part of the celebrations for National Carers Week (9-14 June). This annual event raises awareness of carers issues and helps those who are caring to access support.
