Ground Testing Begins On Reclaimed Harbour Land

Works to carry out ground investigation at Baiter, Whitecliff and Holes Bay (Fleets Lane area) will begin on 2 December by contractors employed by the Borough of Poole.

The works are due to be complete by Christmas this year, weather depending, and funding for the works has been awarded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in order to conform with new legislation.

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Portfolio Holder for Environment and Regeneration, said: "The funding we have received allows us to meet our legal requirement by carrying out this essential work without incurring any financial burden to local taxpayers. The precise content of the extracted material will be recorded in the environments register as part of Poole's strategy to carry out risk assessment on identified sites."

Poole is one of the first local authorities to have a strategy in place to identify sites within their own area for ground investigation and to implement investigations which will determine the type and extent of made-up land and any risk of pollution.

Work will involve the contractors drilling bore holes, a site engineer will be on site to ensure all monitoring points will be securely covered and disturbance is minimised.

Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, said: "Health and Safety is paramount on site and all steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the public, site users and investigation staff."

On completion, the environments register will be a public document available for inspection.
