Cycle Training

Free Bikeability courses for children

Bikeability is cycling proficiency for the 21st century. Using Bikeability training we aim to get more people cycling, more safely and more often.

We now offer:

  • balance
  • level 1, 2 and 3 Bikeability training.

Our balance training is currently aimed at children in reception and year 1, and is designed to help children learn to ride a bike without stabilisers.

Our level 1 and 2 courses are aimed at children in school years 5 and above. Level 3 is aimed at year 8 and above. They are conducted by National Standard trainers on behalf of the Department for Transport who provide funding for this scheme.

The national standard outcomes fall into three levels:

  • level 1 - offers bike handling skills in a controlled environment away from roads

  • level 2 - is taught on roads and teaches you to cycle planned routes on minor roads offering real cycling experience

  • level 3 - will ensure cyclists are able to manage all traffic conditions.

Part of the level 1 and 2 course take place on local roads, so children will need to be able to ride their bike confidently without wobbling. Level 3 takes place on busier roads and those taking part will need to be confident on local roads. Children's bikes must be in good roadworthy condition. We recommend a well fitted helmet, and we provide yellow waistcoats to trainees.

On completion of the course outcomes children receive a Bikeability certificate and badge.

Cycle to work

Once you’re confident of your cycling ability, why not consider cycling to work for all or part of your journey?

Cycling to work is a great way for you to get fit and healthy. Ask your employer if they are signed up to the Cycle to Work Guarantee. This is a voluntary initiative from the Department for Transport, challenging businesses to become cycle friendly employers by making it easy for staff to cycle to and from work.

If you haven't got a bike ask your employer if they have a cycle to work scheme' in place. Businesses can sign up to the scheme and offer their employees the opportunity to spread the cost of getting a bike and accessories over a set period as a tax-exempt benefit.
