Arts and Health

Borough of Poole has a long-established Arts and Health programme delivered in association with a range of local organisations.

We offer an innovative programme of arts projects and opportunities for:

  • disabled people
  • older people
  • people living with dementia
  • carers
  • people with mental health needs.

The Big Night Out

The Big Night Out is a multimedia club night event, run by and for people with learning disabilities, featuring the Mix It Up DJ's. It has been voted the "most wanted" event by people with learning disabilities in Bournemouth and Poole.

Tea dances

A great way to meet new people, keep fit and have fun. A trio of community musicians from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra perform live music from waltzes to tango, jive to jazz. No experience necessary. Come on your own, in a group or with a partner. Our friendly team of volunteers will make sure you are welcome. Contact us for upcoming dates.

Dementia-friendly film screenings

Monthly screenings of popular and classic films run in association with Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the arts. These screenings are open to everyone but are enhanced to meet the needs of people living with dementia. Contact us for upcoming dates.

Stretch 'n' balance

Stretch 'n' balance is a gentle exercise and dance class for men and women on Thursday morning close to Poole town centre. This is a sociable and fun movement session comprising of a series of exercises that can be done both standing and chair based. Suitable for all abilities, the sessions encourage creativity, co-ordination and fun, as well as giving tools to increase mobilisation and balance. Sessions cost £5 per week. Zing community choir

Poole's first community choir for people aged over 50 enjoys a varied repertoire in an informal style. To find out more contact Ted on 07811 490 588.

CareFree choir (for carers)

A fun and informal weekly choir for adults who provide unpaid care or support for a family member. No experience necessary. Free to join. Find out more by contacting Chrissy on 07840 976 584.

Mementos: textiles craft, reminiscence and dementia

Mementos is a new project running from January to July 2017 for people living with dementia and their close family members. Enjoy a relaxed couple of hours being creative, chatting and reminiscing in a supportive and relaxed environment. Places are limited so booking is essential. Mementos is run in partnership with Prama and is funded by The Big Lottery.

Alternative visions: Undiscovered art in the south west

To organise this touring exhibition, Borough of Poole Museum Arts Service is partnering with:

'Alternative visions: undiscovered art in the south west', showcases work by artists in the south west of England who feel excluded from the mainstream art world. The exhibition is scheduled to visit Poole Museum in Spring 2018.
