Energy Advice

No Cost Energy Saving

There are lots of things that you can do to save energy that won't cost you anything.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Don't overfill the kettle - only use the amount of water you need
  • Pull the curtains at dusk - to keep the warmth in
  • Adjust the curtains or blinds in the day to let in as much light as possible
  • Put lids on saucepans when ever possible when cooking
  • Turn the lights off when they are not needed - especially when there is no one in the room
  • Don't leave appliances on standby - they still use energy
  • Hang heavy lined curtains in the winter - they help to stop draughts and will keep in the warmth
  • Try turning the central heating room thermostat down by 1% - this could cut your bills by 10%
  • Stop leaking taps - in just one day a dripping hot water tap can waste energy and enough water to fill a bath
  • Always wash a full load in your washing machine - if you can't, use a half-load or economy setting

You may not save much money by doing one thing, but if you do lots of these - the savings can add up!

Low Cost Energy Saving Ideas

  • Use low energy light bulbs where you can - especially in rooms where you leave lights on for long periods
  • Eliminate draughts around external doors - fix a brush or PVC seal. Don't forget the letter box and the keyhole!
  • Make sure the hot water cylinder has a properly fitted jacket - the British Standard is a least 75mm or 3" thick
  • Ensure that hot water pipes are insulated to stop heat escaping
  • Fill gaps in floor boards and under skirting boards using newspaper, beading or sealant
