Broadstone has a small, quiet cemetery fringed by heathland and woods. Access is from Dunyeats Road, Broadstone.
The cemetery contains the burial place of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 - 1913) the distinguished naturalist and explorer. In 1858 he and his close friend Charles Darwin put forward the theory of evolution by natural selection that led to Darwin writing the controversial book "On The Origin of Species". In 1876 Wallace published his greatest work "The Geographical Distribution of Animals" that laid the basis of the modern science of bio-geography.
Wallace moved to Broadstone in 1902 where he was much loved by local people. He lived for the last eleven years of his life in a house called Old Orchard" that once stood where Wallace Road is today and one of the health centres in Broadstone, at 18 Kirkway, is named Wallace House.
His grave in Broadstone Cemetery is uniquely marked by a fossilised tree.
