Hatch Pond lies to the north of Poole alongside Stinsford Road within the Nuffield Industrial Estate. It provides a nice balance and partnership between industry and semi-natural vegetation symbolised by the Royal Mail installing a piped tunnel beneath their new sorting office along Abingdon Road to allow toad movement to and from the open space in nearby Warburton Road.
Hatch Pond is a balancing pond which receives surface water drainage from the North Canford Heath catchment. Dry heath, humid heath, wet heath, bog, rough grassland, formal grassland, scrub and woodland plantation communities surround the pond and this site is particularly ecologically diverse for such a small area. A beautiful sight at Hatch Pond is the yellow flag iris known locally in Dorset as 'Leavers'. Known to ward off evil, it was described in 1873 by Gerard Manley Hopkins.
