Information about the 2015 Garden Waste Service will be added to this page on 20 October 2014.

Garden Waste

Recycling garden waste has helped us reach our Government target of recycling 40% of total waste. The target has been increased to recycle 45% of household waste by 2014/2015 and to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste sent to landfill, this includes paper, garden and food waste.

Garden waste is biodegradable and when put into landfill creates methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas 30 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. The cost to dispose of waste from black bins is three times more than sending garden waste to be composted; therefore garden waste is no longer accepted in large black bins.

Composting is the best way of disposing of it which is why we offer subsidised compost bins to residents. Compost will help improve the texture, drainage and aeration of the soil and adds nutrients. It is also an environmentally friendly alternative to peat based products.
