Garden Waste

Recycling garden waste has helped us reach our Government target of recycling 40% of total waste. The target has been increased to recycle 45% of household waste by 2014/2015 and to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste sent to landfill, this includes paper, garden and food waste.

Garden Waste

Garden waste is biodegradable and when put into landfill creates methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas 30 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. The cost to dispose of waste from black bins is three times more than sending garden waste to be composted; therefore from March 2012 residents will not be able to put garden waste in large black bins.

Composting is the best way of disposing of it which is why we offer subsidised compost bins to residents. Compost will help improve the texture, drainage and aeration of the soil and adds nutrients. It is also an environmentally friendly alternative to peat based products.

"When am I going to get a green bin?" is a frequently asked question by residents. It was a key demand communicated during the Waste Strategy Consultation in 2008. In addition, residents who already use the service have asked that it be expanded to cover more of the year. The current participation rate is high with 95% of residents putting their bin out once every 6 week period.

How will the service operate in 2012?

An opt-in chargeable garden waste service has been introduced which is available to all domestic properties in Poole. The service now offers subscribers the benefit of an extended fortnightly garden waste collection from March until November utilising a 240 litre green wheeled bin. Collections take place between 7am and 11pm but if your bin has not been emptied on your collection day please leave the bin out and contact us on the following day.

We anticipate that you will have many questions about the new service and have grouped these into the following scenarios. Please select the link that best suits your circumstances.

I have a green bin and want to keep it

I have a green bin and no longer want it

I don't have a green bin but would like one

I don't have a green bin and don't want one

I have subscribed to the Garden Waste Service - what happens next?

How else can I dispose of garden waste?

If you do not wish to subscribe to the service you can dispose of your garden waste free of charge by:

  • Home Composting. Subsidised compost bins are available to all residents.

  • taking it to the Household Waste Recycling Centre. This is currently on Hatch Pond Road, BH17 7LQ. This centre is open daily from 8.30 am to 4.15 pm, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

  • taking it to one of the Mobile Recycling Points. Here you can also take textiles, small electrical items, cardboard and household batteries to be recycled.
