About this nature reserve

Ham Common is a heathland next to Poole Harbour. It offers beautiful views over the harbour, to the Purbecks. The common has an adjoining beach, lake and area of woodland.

Types of habitat

Dry heath, lakes and reservoirs.

What to see

Ham Common is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its rare Eocene Age plant fossils. The Common is also home to rare lizards, birds, and plants. 

Parking

You can park in both free car parks:

  • Lake Drive car park
  • the Viewpoint car park on Napier Road (Rockley Holiday Park).

Dogs

Your dog must be on a short lead during bird breeding, 1 March - 31 July, or when livestock are near.

Remember to keep dogs under close control and to pick up after them.

You can reach Ham Common from: 

  • Lake Drive car park
  • the Viewpoint car park on Napier Road (Rockley Holiday Park).
