During the spring of 2012 works started to massively improve this play area, in the preceding year staff from Leisure Services had worked on the design with a community group which included local residents, Paul Bradbury, Pioneer Minister for Central Poole, parents of children attending Old Town First School and representatives of the residents of Grace Darling House, an Elderly Persons Dwelling adjacent the play area.
The community group led dialogue with the school, playground users and the community to arrive at the new layout. This consultation culminated in an event at the play area on 20th October 2011 at which the scheme was presented to the public.
The finished design is fantastic and the play area is a brilliant new addition to the range of play experiences across Poole and in particular Poole old town.
The ‘natural play’ theme is based around a centrepiece of a 4.5 metre high timber pirate play ship supplied by The Children's Playground Company which provides a range of play experiences for as wide an age range as possible up to those aged 14. Poole Housing Partnership kindly donated £20,000 towards the scheme which was otherwise funded using 106 Developer Contributions (also known as Planning Obligations funding).
Improvements included the complete removal of old play equipment and installation of a range of new equipment , New Sutcliffe swings, a balance trail with items supplied by Playdale and Fawns, a Timberplay "Whirl", a Fenland Leisure multi-directional swing, a Proludic dolphin multi-person springer, a "Clatter Bridge"and special designed fence panels at the entrance, a ships hull seat supplied by Woodthemes.
To complement the above new Medway gates, cycle stands, a starfish wooden table and seating designed for smaller children supplied by Handmade Places, further seating for adults supplied by Furnitubes , two new Streetmaster circular picnic tables, new fencing, and a new footpath with games markings and re landscaping completed the works.
Green Road play area was officially opened by the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Carol Evans with local children dressed as pirates to help her on Thursday 19th July 2012. The ‘Green Road play park group’ decorated the pirate ship, displayed images of their hard work that brought the park to fruition and also arranged for the Town Crier and Poole Marching Band to be part of the celebrations.
New “totem poles” were being designed and constructed by Karen Hanson a local wood carver which have now been installed either side of the entrance gates. These were officially opened on May 1 2012 by the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Carol Evans which completed the improvements.
The play equipment in this play area was manufactured and installed to comply with current safety standards applying at the time of installation and all items of equipment are provided with a safer surface where required.
The play equipment and the immediate surrounding areas are inspected on a regular basis. An annual inspection is also carried out by an independent qualified organisation that prepares a safety audit and a report to enable the Council to plan long term maintenance and renewal.
The site is accessible from Green Road with limited parking available we encourage the use of all our facilities by everyone.
