How to Volunteer in Local Community

Friends of Parks and Gardens

Friends Groups help with everything from practical work to fund-raising.  If you'd like to offer some help for your favourite park or natural habitat, contact your local Friends Group.

Garden Volunteer:

Interested in gardening?

Would you like to help at Upton Country Park?

A new garden group is being formed and we would like you to join us. All instruction and tools will be provided by our experienced staff. This will give you the opportunity to make a huge difference to this well loved Country Park.

Heathwatch volunteer:

Did you know heathland is rarer than rainforest?

Poole’s heaths need your help. If you would like to help care for our heaths, nature reserves and parks please get in touch.

We can organise team building days for your group or business and have a Heathwatch Volunteer Network for individuals who can either provide valuable eyes and ears for us or can get involved in practical maintenance of the heaths.

Have you read our Heathwatch Newsletter?  You may also wish to read the ARC Reptile Guide - both available to download on right hand side of this webpage.

Environmental Education:

We offer family wildlife events and school visits at Upton Country Park which are extremely popular and would like to offer the right person a chance to join in the fun! You will be assisting with delivering educational activities with primary school children, youth groups and families visiting our Greenspace’s, principally Upton Country Park. Your work will inspire and help educate others about wildlife and Poole’s Greenspace’s.

Potential tasks and activities:

  • Guiding Schools and Youth Groups around the open spaces.

  • Presenting educational informtaion about the open spaces, flora and fauna to a group of up to 30 children with either teachers or parents present.

Walk Leader

Would you like to find out more about how to help with people's health and interested in helping to set up some community walks? If the answer is yes, why not become a volunteer walk leader and help others recognise the benefits of walking.  Experience of walking in the outdoors would be an advantage, although full training would be given.

Recreation Development

We work in partnership with sports clubs, schools, community groups and individuals to help shape and improve community sport, facilities and events in Poole. We are always looking for volunteers to help out on projects or events.

Various events we organise enable people in Poole to take part in activities and sports, including Poole Festival of Running, Fundays and Poole Festival of Sport.

Many of the Boroughs sports clubs require volunteers to run. This can be anything from a minute taker at the AGM, a volunteer to support a coach taking a session, someone to run the tea stall at half time or even a treasurer to organise the accounts. Many of the roles require little time but are invaluable to the clubs. The sports clubs in the Borough can be found in the Sports Club Directory and contacted directly or alternatively contact the Recreation Development team should you want a specific role in any club that needs support.

Beach Wardening

Poole’s fantastic Blue Flag beaches are well known as some of the best in the country.  Their golden sands, clean water, waterside facilities and special events attract visitors from far and wide.  Sandbanks beach office and beach stations situated along the prom act as an information point for visitors and a focus during the summer season when the beach is at it’s busiest.  To maintain our beaches to the highest possible standards we need dedicated and enthusiastic beach wardens.  Their role is essential in ensuring that all of our visitors are assured an enjoyable and safe time while they are using Poole’s beaches.

Is there a minimum amount of time I must give?

There's no obligation for volunteers to attend or to give a minimum amount of time. If other people depend on you, we ask you to give your contact reasonable warning if you cannot come in. You decide and agree your commitment with us. You decide how much time you are prepared to give.

What age do I have to be?

In general there is no minimum or maximum age as long as:

  • you are able to make a useful contribution;
  • there is no minimum age requirement for the task; and
  • the activities are suitable for your age and not detrimental to your welfare or education.

There is no upper age limit. Older volunteers are welcome to stay for as long as they can carry out their work effectively and providing they are not putting their, or others', health and safety in jeopardy.

Unfortunately we are unable to offer volunteering experiences for those under 18 yr’s unless arranged via Children and young Peoples Integrated Services.

Can I bring my local youth or community group to volunteer?

Yes, many different types of group volunteer, from youth groups to corporate groups.
