Your Borough Of Poole

Animal Health and Welfare

There is a wide range of legislation in the UK designed to protect the health and welfare of both domesticated and wild animals.

Animal health and welfare legislation is enforced jointly by the Local Authority and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), in association with other government bodies and independent organisations like the RSPCA.

Livestock / Farm animals

ECPS helps to promote and protect the health and welfare of livestock. The service plays a role in policing the livestock industry in the Borough which includes monitoring the disease and welfare on farms and smallholdings (including pet livestock such as goats/chickens) and of animals in transit, including those being imported and exported through Poole port.

We work in close co-operation with other agencies including the State Veterinary Service and Defra .

If you require any advice on keeping livestock or are concerned about the welfare of livestock please contact us.

Defra website contains some useful advice on livestock issues. www.defra.gov.uk
