Poisons Licence

The Poisons Act 1972

  • Controls the sale of poisons
  • Provides for registration of sellers of poisons

Until March 1st 2015 retailers operating within the Borough of Poole that sell substances (on Part 2 of the Poisons List) that contain specified concentration thresholds, including high strength drain and oven cleaners, are required to register with the Borough of Poole and obtain a licence.

As part of the Government’s drive to reduce red tape on business, this requirement for Part 2 Poisons will be abolished when the new laws come into force.

In preparation for 1st of March 2015, in line with a national agreement:

  • If your business currently sells the affected products and your licence is due to expire after the 14th of January 2015, you are no longer required to register with this Authority or pay a renewal fee. Your details will be retained on the list until it is no longer a requirement.

  • If your business does not currently sell the affected products but wishes to do so after the 14th of January 2015, you are no longer required to register with this Authority or pay a fee.

Additionally, the Home Office have written to retailers & industry contacts to share this information with them.

If you are still unsure about whether you need to register or not you can contact us  and we will advise accordingly.
