To do this you need to think about what, in your business, might cause harm to people and decide whether you are doing enough to prevent that harm. This is known as a risk assessment. Once you have identified the risks, you need to decide how to control them and put the appropriate measures in place

Risk Assessment Routefinder is a free web-based tool to help small businesses find out the best way to assess any risks to their business.
The toolkit will help you to:
identify the hazards your business faces and the changes you need to make to deal with them.
manage your risks better and improve your chance of running a successful business.
have a clearer idea on how to use your resources efficiently to control risks.
improve the safety culture in your business and create a record of the risk assessment decisions you’ve made.
The Routefinder tool uses a ‘sat nav’ concept to take you on your journey towards getting a risk map of your organisation. It aims to take the strain out of risk assessment, helping make the process easier and better understand the hazards faced. It is graphically appealing and provides an easy-to-use system which people will find very straightforward. With Routefinder you can start from a number of positions in your ‘risk assessment journey’. So whether you’re new to risk assessment, or an old hand, the Routefinder can help you.
Among these positions are
- 'pre-journey check', which allows you to see how complete your process is;
- ‘full check’, which takes a step-by-step approach, helping you develop your own risk map; and the
- 'direct route' which uses a search engine to help you sort out an urgent problem.
Clicking on a route gives access to a series of questionnaires intended to stimulate group discussion and which can be downloaded and printed or completed on screen and saved to your hard drive. You can also access ‘signposts’, small case studies giving more information and additional web links.
